Does it matter when I declare my major?

If you declare your major as soon as possible, we can then keep you informed of any changes in the program and notify you of events that may be of interest. We have no way to contact undeclared majors.

Can I change my advisor?

You may change your advisor at any time, for any reason, by contacting MS&E student services.

How often should I meet with my advisor?

We recommend that you meet with your advisor on a regular basis, and check in with MS&E student services at least once every quarter. The first week of each quarter is usually very busy, so plan ahead if you need to meet with your advisor or student services during the first week.

Can I transfer credit to Stanford?

Students may transfer up to 45 units to Stanford. All transfer credit must be approved by the Registrar's Office. To use transferred courses toward School of Engineering requirements (math, science, TIS or fundamentals), you must submit a petition to the School of Engineering Student Affairs Office. To use transferred courses to count toward MS&E requirements (depth), you must submit a petition to the MS&E Department Student Services Office.

Can I petition to deviate from the degree requirements?

Students may petition to deviate from School of Engineering requirements (math, science, TIS or fundamentals) by submitting a deviation petition to the MS&E Department Student Services Office. To petition to deviate from MS&E requirements (depth), submit a deviation petition to the MS&E Department Student Services Office.

Can I use one course to count for two different degree requirements?

Only WAYS/GERs and the WIM requirements may satisfy multiple degree requirements. All other courses can be used to satisfy only one degree requirement. This includes multiple majors and minors.

Where do I find a program sheet?

Current and past program sheets are available in the School of Engineering Undergraduate Handbook.

Are there department email distribution lists?

Yes, there are two department email distribution lists.  All declared majors are added onto both the msande-undergrad at lists list and the msande-jobs at lists.  Undeclared students may add themselves onto the msande-jobs at lists list.
